Are You Fully Insured While Driving Someone Else’s Car?

partners in risk

Do you have a company car?  Do you ever borrow a car or truck for personal use? These types of questions lead us to help our readers understand the coverage “Extended Non-Owned Auto Coverage.”  This is another good reason to use an experienced professional agent who truly understands your personal risks and who can communicate reasonable options to you.

Every auto policy includes exclusions.  One exclusion is coverage for personal use of a vehicle owned by someone else, or personal use of a company vehicle.  Most people think the coverage on a non-owned vehicle they are driving will provide them coverage.  This is not necessarily true; you may have a gap in coverage if you are involved in an accident using someone else’s vehicle.  Your personal automobile policy does not automatically extend liability to non-owned automobiles used, or available for your regular use.  In order to fully protect yourself you need to have your auto policy endorsed to pick up this exposure.

Extended Non-Owned Coverage

Each policy may vary, but here is the basic coverage description.  Coverage may apply to your auto liability and medical payments should you be liable because of an auto accident.  A sample policy wording would look like this; “We will provide Liability Coverage for any vehicle, other than “your covered auto,” which is furnished or available for the regular use of the named individual.  We will provide Medical Payments Coveragefor “bodily injury” sustained while “occupying,” or when struck by, any vehicle (other than”your covered auto”) which is furnished oravailable for the regular use of the named individual.”

Don’t be left uninsured when a simple call can fix this issue.  The extended non-owned coverage is inexpensive and worth having if you drive a company car, or if you borrow a car from another party.
